Porous Edges: Redefine Moss Park

Environmental Design
BackgroundThe project "Porous Edges: Redefine Moss Park" is situated within downtown Toronto, specifically in the Moss Park neighbourhood, where is struggling with safety concerns, reflecting from high crime rate and protective measures everywhere, and encountering huge population dynamics and wealth disparities due to gentrification. Amidst this transformation, Moss Park stands as a pivotal public space, uniquely positioned at the intersection of these dynamic socio-economic forces. On each edge, it perspectively marked by the continuous development of high-end condominiums, transportation infrastructure such as subway stations, disadvantaged social housing initiatives, shelters, or emergency drop-in centers.Thesis QuestionTherefore, how can we imbue Moss Park with capability if being penetrated, addressing the diverse needs of its inhabitants and mitigating issues of injustice and safety?

“The concept of "Porous Edges" aims to alleviate the current issues in Moss Park, particularly concerning safety and community dynamics. These issues stem from both physical and social barriers within the neighbourhood, creating an atmosphere of tension and unease. Tangible manifestations include fenced boundaries and intangible divisions between community groups, leading to conflicts and discomfort. To tackle these challenges, the design strategy focuses on breaking down barriers and fostering connections between Moss Park and its surroundings. This involves analyzing existing urban planning shortcomings and redefining the function and experience of each edge. Additionally, the strategy incorporates special programs tailored to the unique characteristics of each edge. The design introduces four distinct edge typologies, adaptable to population fluctuations and safety concerns. An entertaining edge is proposed for northern low-income residents, featuring a woodland area and a water park. An activating edge supports social housing projects in the eastern precincts, with a community market and greenhouse to promote engagement. A balancing edge offers a tranquil retreat with continuous seating areas harmonizing with the park's tranquillity. Lastly, a protecting edge serves the homeless population, providing essential services within an accessible armoury building with foldable walls and open access to the park.Overall, the goal is to transform Moss Park into a cohesive and inclusive community space, where physical and social barriers are replaced with opportunities for connection and empowerment. Through thoughtful design and strategic programming, the Porous Edges concept aims to create a safer, more vibrant environment for all residents.”
