Three 삼베 /sam.be/ quilt hanging

“As did my great-grandmother, so did my grandmother, so did my mother, and so did I.It was common for specific trade skills to be handed down from generation to generation back then. My great-grandmother taught my grandmother how to quilt and my grandmother taught my mother how to quilt. It was my turn to learn but I couldn't as I came to Canada alone. This work is my attempt to learn this family craft by looking at my previous generation's work and mimicking their technique. Out of the three quilt works present one is by my great-grandmother, one is by my grandmother, and finally last one is by myself. As someone from a family of craftsmen, craft held a great deal of pride and the point where we all would gather as a family. But as the only member to ever leave the country this craft also became a representation of the need or almost an obsession that I had to belong somewhere.”
