Spirits See Red (Drum)

Sculpture
2022
Drum frame, steel chain, size 11 seed beads, artificial sinew.
Spirits See Red (Drum), 2022, is the sculpture piece from the 2022 installation from the Open House at Rezonance Print Shop in London, ON. A multi-media installation including screenprints, large-scale prints, red lighting, and a drum, was created during the Intro to Wood Fabrication course. These elements came together to create an immersive experience. I was honoured to participate in The Out of Sound Rezonance Silk-screen Intern Program, in the summer of 2022.

“The sculpture’s narrative focuses on the Anishinaabe concept of kobade meaning the relations to our ancestors, our grandparents, parents, children, and grandchildren, and acknowledging that we are all a link in a chain or vital park of spiral. The drum mimics our heartbeat and can synchronize our beat together. The red beads communicate the bloodline— our family, to the land, the stars, our songs, and the love we have for each other. Kobade.
