Greenhouse

My animation ‘Greenhouse’ is based on my personal feelings of growing up with overprotective parents. There is a Korean saying that is similar to the English expression ‘he/she lives in a bubble’, which is ‘a plant living in a greenhouse'. This phrase is the main idea of my work, and it inspired me to create a story that reflects the literal meaning: plants living in a greenhouse.

“The animation features a cast of characters that resemble each other, similar to The Smurfs (1961). Their small appearance was inspired by the forest spirits characters Kodamas from Princess Mononoke (1997).The monochromatic color scheme amplifies the feeling of restriction and adds depth to the story. Similar to my own personal experience of wanting to move to Canada against my mother’s wishes, the main character, Lily, also dreams of escaping. Lily's younger brother, Liko, reflects my own experience of looking after my youngest brother who is 10 years my junior.Real textured paper was used for the background to strengthen the nature-like atmosphere of the plants and the greenhouse. All elements and characters were kept translucent, allowing the texture of the paper to be seen.”
