Memories Through a Disappearing World is a graduate thesis study that explores the concept of loss, through the lens of collective memories. Part 1 of this project seeks to examine specific aspects of sensory information through writing, in hopes to revive and revisit lost memories. This book is divided into two sections; our pre-tech past, and our present and digital future. Each memory is described using sensory-grounded language, accompanied by visual support.Part 2 of this project consists of a coded website. Adapting to new technologies, The Digital Archives seeks to provide a living space for current collective memories that will cease to exist in the future. Based on personal speculation, this project questions the concept of time by placing our present experiences in different time frames. Everyday, these memories are slowly disappearing into our past, while living in a digital future online. Visit: https://webspace.ocad.ca/~alex.bedard/thesis/
“Sensory information is being altered with new technologies, allowing these collective memories to slowly fade away. By replacing our senses with new ones, we are contributing to a new world; a world that continuously, and inevitably, disappears.”
