These images represent the intersection of fashion and costuming. It marked a pivotal moment where I became deliberate in my choice of attire with stilts. I was reflecting on the historical context of the Moko Jumbies, who initially wore dresses until incidents of men lifting their skirts became prevalent, they switched to pants. I found myself contemplating this legacy as I adorned myself with a dress on stilts. Navigating a predominantly male-dominated practice has spurred numerous inquiries for me. A consistent thread in my work is my inclination to challenge conventional perceptions, particularly within the realm of masquerade. Beyond addressing the female experience, this piece delves into the intricate relationship between identity and environment. As a member of the Black Diaspora, there exists a palpable pressure to conform, yet I pose the question: what happens when we embrace our differences and venture beyond our comfort zones?I crafted and designed these 5ft stilts adding fabrics to give a whimsical essence to match the dress. These elements and details were purposefully chosen to evoke a sense of playfulness and wonder. Attached to these stilts are high-top Nike Air Force 1's, not just viewed as footwear, but as symbolic sneakers representing the younger generation. Their presence serves as a nod to contemporary trends, injecting a subtle yet profound commentary on the intersection of tradition and modernity within the context of my artistic expression. “Shortly after learning to walk on stilts, I gave myself the name Pixel Jumbie as my alter ego. The term “Jumbie” is a Caribbean word for a ghost or spirit. Pixel Jumbie strides with confidence, towering and owning her presence. She's all about pushing boundaries and carrying forward our cultural heritage.”
