PIPE²- LINKING THE CITY TO THE AIRPORT
How can architecture enhance pedestrian experience in the transportation sector?It is essential to understand how people move around a built environment and how they interact with the physical space around them. This project explores a theoretical design that aims to revitalize and streamline the existing Ferry Boat and Underground Tunnel system linking the city to the Billy Bishop Toronto Airport. It introduces two new pathways: The Pipe and Leisure Bridge, to co-exist with the Underground Tunnel. These features form a new pedestrian circulation channel to improve foot traffic flow in the area. The new pathways provide a quick and convenient route for travelers and offer an immersive experience for the general public. This project is specifically designed to integrate adaptive technologies to lessen its carbon footprint.THE PIPE:Provides a more direct and fast route over the waters of the Western Channel to the main Airport Departure level. It goes above and runs parallel to the existing Underground Tunnel. The linear ground-level approach communicates a clear direction to the destination. It imbibes a feeling of elevation as users pass through the space. Moreover, the infrastructure is designed to host a hydrogen fuel pipe system.LEISURE BRIDGE:It is an open pathway winding through the waters of the Western Channel on the city-side. It serves as a transitional space, allowing the public a chance to pause and immerse themselves in the surrounding environment. It contrasts with the conventional service-based infrastructure by allowing pedestrians to enjoy the outdoors and city views as it connects to Lakeshores Scenic Walk and the Little Norway Park.UNDERGROUND TUNNEL:The existing Underground Tunnel is an alternate route for the public and passengers coming from the Airport's Arrivals and Baggage Claims. Aside from its utilitarian function, it accommodates a geo-exchange system that weaves throughout the space's interior as an alternate heating and cooling system.
