Living in a melting pot society, we can often find ourselves in the duality of attempting to conform to societal norms or expectations without understanding their colonial roots. Duality visually represents a fragmented self, drawing on W. E. B. Du Bois’ concept of “Double Consciousness.” The concept of "Double Consciousness" encompasses both the external imposition of white stereotypes and racism, and the internal tension between African identity and 'the American identity'. This psychological framework enabled him to argue that the African American identity was not abnormal, but distinct and equally valid. In doing so, Du Bois emphasized that the fragmented self should strive for a ‘better and truer self,’ which combines both identities without sacrificing either.
