To Those Who Have Slipped My Reach

Photography
2022
12.5" x 7.75" Book, and 6 15" x 20" Prints
A photobook uncovering the attchment we hold to those who have left us, and the path back to ourselves.

“a photo-book revealing the vulnerability I’ve felt in loss. Accompanying this book is a pair of 3d printed hands, holding the book as a gesture of passing from myself, to the viewer. The ambiguity of the hands leaves room for interpretation, it allows for a vulnerable interaction between the piece and the viewer while tying the imagery from the book and the sculpture together. The book cover is handmade, from a thick mounting paper, and a delicate handmade paper, with a green, natural motif throughout. The book cover is meant to foreshadow the contents inside, so choosing a delicate material was essential to me. The writings inside are pulled from a journal of unsent letters I’ve been writing for the past half decade, these are letters that I’ve written in my most vulnerable state, so the imagery accompanied on the page had to be frail by nature. I chose a mixture of images that have been distorted and erased, increasing in size and impact to the page as we get further through the book. I wanted these images to represent me coming back to myself, regaining my passions and myself as I get more comfortable with the loss.Throughout my book, the motif of flowers, specifically dead and dying flowers is overwhelming. Flowers hold so much meaning romantically, and in relationships, and the idea of flowers dying feels true to the nature of relationships, watching as they slowly lose colour and life. Lastly, the majority of the photographs inside of the book are self portraits, representing the desire for physical comfort, and physical touch. When grieving I find myself craving the small acts of love that I took for granted before, the shoulder to cry on, looking at my hands reminiscing of the hands that used to hold them. I wanted to put myself in my own shoes of grieving, and take myself into the world of grieving between the pages.”
