This is a portrait of Eli Sage’s partner, Nick. Nick grew up in the Conservative Jewish community and deeply engages in the analysis of Jewish tradition and his connection to it. He is developing his own practices of Judaism, rooted in tradition but innovating its rituals in his own unique way.

“I painted this portrait of Nick using acrylic paint on two layers of transparent plexiglass that I laser cut and inserted into a wooden base. The organic motifs and flowers are an extension of my practice in recreating and drawing on traditions of Jewish Papercutting. Flowers, vines and leaves historically symbolize Gan Eden (the Garden of Eden), which is synonymous with Heaven in Judaism. ”
