This piece is exceptionally unique in that the frame’s interior frame sits out at an angle, something I have never seen before. What this antique frame’s original purpose was, I might never know, but now it serves as an amusing object for me to build a painting around. As soon as I saw the frame on Facebook Marketplace I knew it had to be mine and I knew exactly what the painting needed to be. Hung at just above the average viewer’s height, the painting’s subject has the illusion of falling forward. This frame came very damaged, and I had to take steps to restore it. Thanks to AGO conservator Julia Campbell-Such, I received tips and tricks from a professional in the field. As someone looking to do a master’s in art conservation, this opportunity was invaluable, giving me a hands-on glimpse into what my future could look like.
