Microscope Slide, Cheek Scrapping, Fuchsin Cell Stain, Compound Microscope
This is a microscope slide I prepared myself from our Life Studies lab. I have an anxious habit known as Morsicatio buccarum, or chronic cheek biting, which leaves me with dead skin buildup and scar tissue on the inside of my mouth. This habit is a body-focused repetitive behaviour (BFRB) that can be associated with many different neurodiversities and psychological disorders, such as Autism, Anxiety, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), to name a few.
“The stress of my final year has caused an increase in anxious habits, so I felt it was intriguing to explore the physical manifestations of my anxiety under the compound microscope.”
