Set 1
Installation
2019
Mixed Media
6'x4'x4'
This piece is a mixed media installation created using various painting substrates (canvas, board, and panel), painted with oil paint, and then assembled into a corner installation. The floor is soft sculpture created using natural coconut fibres and found debris. The final piece is an image that has been digitally altered, and is presented on a monitor placed in front of a chair for the viewer to sit on.
“Set 1 is a first exploration into spaces and their affect on viewers. The installation is created using a variety of juxtaposing elements to create an uncanny, dreamlike, manufactured reality. The intent was to create an ambiguous space with no affixed time of day or year and no affixed place on earth. Keeping with the ambiguity and mysteriousness of the space, the environment is also devoid of any human narrative. This aligned with the mixture of familiar and unfamiliar elements, the viewer can look at the work and situate themselves within it and create their own narrative unique to themselves, essentially becoming the lead role of their own film. The image is presented on a television screen and placed in a subtly domiciliary environment to make the gallery space slightly more domestic and to relate the viewer spatially to the work.”
