NEW PARK NEW TORONTO

Environmental Design
2023
I Live in South Etobicoke, the area is called New Toronto. The site Lakeshore Village park is located in the center of New Toronto. It is a big community park that is 200m by 70m surrounded by a few tall co-op apartments building as well as some low-rise townhouses. there are 7 co-op organization within this neibourhood, over 800 units with one to three bedrooms apartment, the resident live here doesn’t have the access to a balcony or backyard, green space become very important to the family live here. With such a dense population I find the park is weirdly empty, and quiet all the time. It doesn't have the character to attract residents. My design solution is taking over the existing green park space, create an elevated park- people can access in different levels. It will help bring more functions to this park meanwhile make it more visually visible, it become a place that people enjoy to come. Using the park to tie the community together by making physical and visual connections from the park to the surrounding building. A landmark that serves the community and encourages community engagement even more create memories and a sense of belonging.

“The park is explored as both a social construct and a physical territory. The design removed the third floor of four towers, created four bridges that allows the physical connation from the four tall towers directly to the park which the resident will have direct walkway from the apartment building to the second-floor community garden level. The center Ohio buckeye tree will become a landmark of the park, it is a common tree in South Etobicoke area, that can reach 20m tall which people can see it on the street level. It can create a sense of way finding which leads people to the park. The tree and has beautiful bloom in spring. I believe it has potential to tiger public memories that make the place becoming meaningful for the Neiborhoods. ”
