Duvardaki Yazılar (Writings on the Wall)
Installation
2025
watercolour and color pencil on paper, acrylic on wall
This piece is inspired by the traditional Turkish shadow puppet play Karagöz and Hacivat, an element of Turkey’s intangible cultural heritage. Encountering it through the UNESCO listings led me to explore how an immaterial tradition could be translated into a tangible artwork, and how its humour and improvisation continue to echo within my own cultural memory.By bringing elements of shadow theatre into drawing and painting, the work reflects on cultural transmission, otherness, and the traces of heritage we carry across distances. Rather than offering conclusions, it invites viewers to consider how identity is formed through what is seen, what is felt, and what remains in between.
