Portrait of Judith Scott.

““The Sculptor” is a portrait of Judith Scott (1943-2005), an American textile artist with Down Syndrome. From the ages of 7 to 42, she lived in Columbus State Institution, Ohio, U.S. From 1987 (when her twin sister Jill took her out of the institution) to her death in 2005, Judith attended the Creative Growth Art Centre in Oakland, California, which is one of the world’s first artistic non-profit studio spaces for artists with disabilities. There, she was given full freedom to express herself in any which way she so desired, and she chose fibre art as her outlet. In creating her sculptures, Judith took whatever objects she could find and would wrap them in coloured strings and cords to make diverse sculptures of many different shapes and sizes. ”
