Repurposed skirt, multiple coloured thread
Creating traditional Italian clothing. The embroidered parts of the skirt are meant to hold my Nonni's story of coming to Canada and creating a fun child like depiction of my family history. See the completed look in person at GradEx opening night!
“Inspired by a bambolina my Nonna Ignoto gave to me, I decided to design a Calabrese costume for myself. All the clothing has been repurposed or thrifted for this costume. It was a collaborative project as my Nonna taught me different stitches for the embroidery and also helped me to complete the outfit. A list of the symbols on the skirt; rings, a boat, two babies, 3 buildings, wheat, espresso cup and moka pot, snowbells, the Wampum belt, malocchio, cornicello, maple leaf, tomato and tomato sauce Not seen here: orange tree, pasta, Italian flag, and Ignoto. ”
