“I have a paintbrush for a megaphone. In light of the current political climate in the Middle East, my work has evolved from highlighting the beauty and nuances of my Egyptian identity and culture to mirroring the escalating political unrest and humanitarian crises in the region. The body of work I have assembled is an exploration of narrative and visualization's capacity to inspire and mobilize, reflecting my belief in the transformative power of art. Each work highlights a different facet of the struggle for social change, emphasizing the community's pursuit of dignity and rights under oppressive regimes, including local political leaders and Western influences. By employing a medium associated with Western culture, I intend to subvert and challenge the Western colonial narrative, using it instead to craft pieces that stand in opposition to these agendas. My exploration of Middle Eastern politics and history frequently presents me with impactful images. These paintings reinterpret widely circulated photographs, whose sources have faded, through my lens, transforming them to reflect my journey of learning, seeing, and experiencing.
