Critcism and Curatorial Practice

“Affairs is a moment-defining publication, marking current moves in contemporary painting from Toronto to Montreal to London, UK. Through criticism, field research and interviews, viewers become immersed in the new world of painting, discovering artists and their work not solely in its visual component but their philosophies in painting practice and who they are. I categorize my research into two major themes or- happenings: Realism Resurfaced and Oddities; Ugly and Frowned. Each major theme has specific subtopics that act as criteria, categorizing artists in the publication as fit. Realism Resurfaced addresses the resurgence of Realism and Representational painting in contemporary art, producing nuanced criticism on why this style has resurfaced and who is producing such work with excellence. Oddities; Ugly and Frowned looks at Kitsch and Unglamourous paintings, positioning them in praise and not in distaste. There is a particular attraction held for these works, as well as diverse representations of concept, this section looks at artists who fall under these ideas. Affairs is largely about the current culture of painting through these themes and movements I reference. Influenced by happenings like local exhibitions and painters I’ve known for years or on my Instagram Explore page. I felt Affairs was a necessary title because of its adaptable use; current affairs, affairs as in relationships etc. It truly is an all-encapsulating project, themes mesh and rely upon one another, communities of artists are formed in their similarities and micro-movements are born. The project was to not only define a moment but also define myself as a critic, exploring my opinions and thoughts through research synthesizing work I find exceptionally tasteful in current contemporary painting. The design was intended to reflect contemporariness, simple font, clean layout and fun spreads. Organization and readability were important to me while creating this project, I wanted the average person with no art background- or an experienced gallerist to be able to read and follow my ideas. Art assumes hierarchy and status; I tried my best to dismantle such through playful writing and personable language. ”
