“My work aspires to be a message of hope, of resilience, a visualization of an interior battle in the hopes of resolving it through catharsis. It places the artist at the center of the work, calling onto the humanity of the viewer as they view and inevitably judge this body of work. ”

Lydia Roy is a contemporary painter based in Toronto, Canada, originally from Québec City. Her practice revolves around what she describes as an exploration of self, a discovery of the mind through creation and a desire to gain understanding of the human condition through artistic practice. In the past year, Lydia had the opportunity to work on her thesis project, "what it means to be brave", which discussed themes of feminism, introspection, vulnerability, strength and connection. She utilizes introspective self-portraits, made with primarily oil paint, as a way to visualize the complexity of her lived experiences as well as to put herself on display as a way to summon vulnerability from both herself and the viewer.
