Raiy Admassu is an industrial designer who focuses on sustainable design and community-based solutions. This means building with constraints in mind—from cost to materials to access. She rethinks everyday tools to become more simplified mechanics and locally available materials, making essential systems more affordable and accessible. Her thesis emphasizes affordability, practicality, and local resource use, addressing critical challenges in rural areas. She redesigned soap-making kit with western rural Zambia in mind, aiming to provide a cost-effective alternative to recurring soap purchases, reduce dependence on inconsistent external aid, and promote local production. This thesis integrates traditional knowledge with modern design practices to improve sanitation and hygiene in underserved communities.
