“I explore themes of memory, migration, and motherhood—connecting ancestral heritage with the intimate, present-day experience of raising children between worlds. It’s a visual narrative where ancient songs, lost landscapes, and maternal strength converge—offering a bridge between generations, cultures, and identities.”

Karen Pe’er (she/her) is a Toronto-based visual artist, mother and mature student at OCAD University. Her work is deeply rooted in her cultural heritage, coming from mixed Polish and Yemenite roots, and her experiences as a member of the Jewish diaspora. Through her art, Pe’er reflects on the difficult truths of her heritage, acknowledging the painful experiences faced in a land meant to offer sanctuary. In reclaiming these narratives, she seeks to honour the resilience of her people and bring their stories out of silence. Pe’er’s goal is to breathe new life into age-old traditions, ensuring they are not lost to history but continue to thrive in our modern world. Her work not only delves into the personal and collective history of the Yemenite Jewish community but also serves as a powerful call to safeguard these traditions, ensuring they are not isolated to history books and museums, but continue to live on through the generations.
