“Through my work, I explore the intricacies of the immigrant experience in Canada, delving into themes of displacement, identity loss, and identity formation. Utilizing a diverse range of mediums, and collage images, I symbolically articulate the complexities of being and existing within a diaspora. Each composition serves as an illustrative story about my ongoing journey towards understanding my Tanzanian Canadian identity.”
Stella Obedi is an emerging Tanzanian Canadian mixed media artist. Currently pursuing her BFA in Drawing and Painting at OCAD University.Stella takes inspiration from the everyday, her Tanzanian-Canadian background, and various other interests. Stella has recently begun experimenting with incorporating African textiles and different fabrics into her mixed media pieces.Her artworks have been exhibited throughout numerous local and international galleries, including the Ada Slaight Gallery, Artscape Youngplace, the OCAD U student gallery, and in Germany. Additionally, Stella has been featured in the Flash Forward Incubator Program 2020 by the Magenta foundation. In their online exhibition/publication "It's a Plastic World".
