José María Mancía is a contemporary lens-based artist working in Toronto, Canada. His practice is primarily focused on investigating the underlying structures that comprise photography and exploring the nature of photographs both before and behind the camera. A second-generation immigrant, Jose’s practice strives to implement decolonial and queering ideologies in his practice with respect to notions of subjecthood and objectivity as they relate to the act of image capture. Jose is transfixed by the concept that the discipline of photography is predicated by the act of looking. His praxis centres on probing entanglements of photography with Otherness and the effects of photography and the gaze of the viewer with the identity of the Other.
