Oil on cloth bandana
22" x 22"
My self portrait ties everything in this series together and serves as a way convey my story. I decided to use the bandana itself as my canvas. I sought to embrace the materiality of the bandana. For my portrait I took inspiration from Kehinde Wiley’s portraits of bipoc men in Renaissance style. I thought of myself as someone who would never be painted in that era due to the colour of my skin and social status. I reject the idea of classism representing my worth. To further show my disdain sentiments towards class, I painted a gold and black bandana on my head as my crown.
