Photogram
Photography
2024
This project involved the creation of an analog photogram, a cameraless photographic process using light-sensitive paper and physical objects. By carefully arranging materials such as leaves, crystals, and water on photographic paper and exposing them to brief flashes of light, I investigated the relationship between transparency, texture, and light. The process required a delicate balance of timing and composition, resulting in abstract yet highly detailed prints. The project also included a reflective written response, exploring the outcomes, surprises, and future creative possibilities with this medium.
“Project StatementThis photogram project allowed me to explore photography through its most fundamental elements: light, shadow, and material. What surprised me most was the sensitivity of exposure times; what I expected to be long exposures turned out to be most effective at just 2.5 seconds. This precision revealed how dynamic and responsive the process is. The materials I used, particularly leaves and crystals, created beautiful textures and subtle light patterns, emphasizing how even transparent or semi-translucent objects can manipulate light in unexpected ways. Looking ahead, I would continue to experiment with object placement and layering to push the expressive potential of the technique even further. This project has shown me that photograms are not just technical exercises, but opportunities to capture the ephemeral and the intricate in a uniquely analog way.”
