Gently Bruised (Self Portrait), 2023, touches on the fragility of life and how bodies heal. Bruises, typically associated with force and violence, can also be seen as delicate and colourful markers of the body's healing process. Upon receiving heart surgery in 2022 I noticed these delicate bruises that began to form around the small incision that was made, a sign of healing. I was inspired by the way the bruises beautifully cascaded down my body and changed hues as my body healed. Through the use of staining and material, this piece highlights our bodies' sensitive and delicate nature through the use of staining and material. The fabric becomes an extension of my body, with the paint becoming a part of the body as it seeps into the surface.
