Brantford’s downtown core is in urgent need of spaces that prioritize mental health, recovery, and social reintegration. The existing urban fabric, shaped in part by establishments like Elements Casino, has contributed to ongoing patterns of homelessness and community disconnection. Despite various social services in the area, there remains a lack of cohesive support systems that address both immediate care and long-term stability. My thesis explores how the removal of harmful urban influences can create room for healing-centered infrastructure, proposing a new model of care through the development of a recovery center paired with transitional housing.
“My thesis proposes detoxifying Brantford's downtown by demolishing Elements Casino, located in Brantford, a contributor to social decline and homelessness, and replacing it with a recovery center and transitional housing. This redevelopment fosters healing and social reintegration, transforming the area into a center of care and wellness.”
