Playing with Knives

Painting
2021
Oil and acrylic on wood panel with hot-melt adhesive
30" x 30"
This piece serves as a reminder of what life is like for a young man growing up in a bad environment. I recall the times as a teenager, when my friends and I would carry knives in our pockets as a form of protection. The knives did more than that, they gave us this extra sense of courage. Almost as if you were untouchable. When you aren’t involved with the streets, you can become a target, and you never want to be the target. You are forced to put on a fake macho persona as a means for survival. It isn't enough just to play the part; you must convince yourself you are the toughest. You can never show weakness.
