Giao is a one-table, one-menu, one-space dining experience designed to help two generations reconnect. At Giao, each reservation is private. Only one group is hosted at a time, giving guests a quiet and intimate space to talk freely without interruption or outside pressure. The menu features traditional Vietnamese home-cooked meals. Along with the food, guests will receive conversation prompts that are carefully designed to help them open up without feeling awkward. These prompts make it more natural to start a conversation, easier to express thoughts and feelings. In addition to the meal, the space includes simple activities and a letter-writing corner. These help guests reflect, think deeper, and reconnect with their inner thoughts.Giao acts as a third space, not home, not work, but a neutral, calm environment where people can feel safe to be honest and vulnerable. It is a space for meaningful conversations, thoughtful silence, and emotional connection through food and shared time.

“There is a significant communication gap between generations. Older Vietnamese generations often find it difficult to express vulnerability. They tend to avoid direct confrontation and, during moments of conflict, may resort to saying hurtful things they do not truly mean. As a result, important thoughts and feelings are often left unspoken.Younger generations, in contrast, are more likely to adopt a defensive stance, focusing on protecting themselves rather than listening to the other side. This dynamic makes meaningful dialogue and mutual understanding even more challenging.I’ve come to realize that the key to closing this gap lies in communication. However, meaningful communication requires openness, vulnerability, and a sincere willingness to resolve misunderstandings. For many Vietnamese families, this remains a challenge. Confrontation is often avoided, and as a result, important thoughts and feelings are left unspoken. This is why I believe there needs to be something to act as a bridge or a third space. My vision is to create a warm, welcoming environment that encourages honest dialogue and emotional connection, helping families open up and communicate.”
