This image is of myself as a young girl in my bedroom. The doorframe crops the left of the image, creating a more intimate space in the rest of the photo. My sleeping self is covered by a white canopy and wrapped in pink sheets. This was my bedroom for the first several years of my life before I outgrew the space and moved rooms.
“This painting represents the peace and safety that I associate with my childhood. Soundly sleeping knowing that I'm being cared for. This space allows for quiet reminiscence on what was; with endless time ahead. I wanted to capture this moment and its tenderness, as if I was the one looking back at myself. The first memory I have of worrying about my future was during my transition from kindergarten to primary school; I remember lying awake in my bed, becoming aware that with each milestone was another for my parents, bringing them closer to old age and anticipating that grief. ”
