Sex Work is Work
Photography
“Sex Work Is Work” is a documentary-style photo series and short film exploring the current state of sex work in 2024, from both first-hand and social perspectives. The images consist of sex workers in their homes performing preparatory tasks for both their work and personal lives.
“At the heart of this project, Emily Guitar's mission is to challenge prevailing narratives and prompt critical conversations about sex work. Through documentary-style images and candid interviews, the project aims to make the audience question their understanding of sex work and ignite discussions around proper protection and support for these workers. Furthermore, the work discusses intersections and the history of sex work within both individual and social contexts and creates a representation of sex workers that emphasizes both the joys and struggles of this work. As an artist and activist, Emily Guitar recognizes the importance of challenging stereotypes and promoting social change. Informed by extensive research into the history of sex work and the contemporary landscape, the project sheds light on the realities of sex work, both positive and negative. It explores the intersections of technology, economics, and gender politics, inviting viewers to reflect on the broader socio-historical context shaping the profession.Ultimately, the project catalyzes dialogue and action, encouraging viewers to critically examine their attitudes toward sex work and advocate for policies that prioritize the rights and dignity of sex workers. Through dialogue, storytelling, and visual art, it invites audiences to join in amplifying the voices of sex workers and working towards a more just and inclusive society.”
