Out Of Sight: The Overlooked Women Of Science
Graphic Design
2025
A publication highlighting the extraordinary journeys of ten pioneering women who broke barriers and reshaped the landscape of science. In fields traditionally dominated by men, these remarkable women faced discrimination, dismissal, and a persistent lack of recognition, yet they endured. Their stories are shared to honour their resilience, shed light on their achievements, and ensure their legacies are never forgotten.
“Out of Sight was inspired by a lecture where I first learned about Eunice Foote—a scientist who discovered the impact of CO2 on the environment but wasn’t taken seriously. Later, a male scientist published similar findings and was credited with the discovery. That moment led me to learn about something called the Matilda Effect—a pattern where women in science don’t get the recognition they deserve, and their work is often credited to men instead. So I began compiling a list of women in science who had been overlooked, not credited for their work, or pushed aside because of sexism. At first, this project was just a series of collages. But as I kept researching, I became more and more drawn to the stories of these incredible women. It didn’t feel right to stop at just visuals—I wanted to give space to their voices, their accomplishments, and the impact they made, even if it wasn’t fully recognized in their lifetimes. That’s when the project grew into a publication. With Out of Sight, I hope to shine a light on the long history of bias against women in science—and in many other fields, too. I want to start conversations about these issues and help create space where women feel heard, respected, and empowered to speak up. This is the first of three planned publications, all focused on telling the stories of women who were overlooked but never stopped pushing forward.”
