“"Affirmations" is meant to bring a relatable awkwardness to mindfulness practices that are encouraged but are rarely helpful to a chronically uncomfortable twenty-something girl, illustrating these affirmations through playfully gross abstractions and folk art elements are meant to normalize and shed light on these experiences that are often ignored or seen as taboo.”

Riley Drummond is a Toronto-based artist currently in her fourth year at OCADu, completing her BDes in Illustration. She works digitally, in greyscale with graphite, or acrylic ink when creating abstract. She primarily creates art stemming from personal experiences and journal entries, focusing specifically on themes of girlhood, growing up, rotting away in your bedroom, her mental health, and dreams. She is not one to shy away from graphic imagery, her art often including rotten teeth, period blood, and dead animals as well as dishevelled women. Drummond's surreal and collage-like style creates disorienting liminal and dreamy spaces, intending to leave the viewer looking inwards after viewing her art. As she continues to grow as an artist, Drummond hopes to continue creating art that illustrates the uncomfortable yet beautiful notions of getting older and trying to figure things out. She is currently interested in making zines, animations, and sewing the two of them together-- creating universes that replicate each other in both mediums.
