“Zhuang Zi once dreamed he was a butterfly, flitting and fluttering around happily and freely. As a butterfly, he did not know he was Zhuang Zi. Suddenly, he awoke and realized he was Zhuang Zi, solid and unmistakably human. Then he asked himself the following question, was I Zhuang Zi dreaming I was a butterfly, or am I now really a butterfly dreaming that I am Zhuang Zi? (Zhuangzi)My works begin from the premise that “life is but a dream,” indicating that human life—including human existence, experiences, and memories—is fleeting, impermanent, and insubstantial. In essence, everything we are involved in reality may be gone instantly as a dream vanishes soon after awakening. I explore reflections as means of metaphor for illusions or dreams to connote such ephemeral and elusive nature of our life.Embracing the idea that seemingly contradictory or opposing forces in nature are, in fact, interdependent and complementary, I compose landscapes where illusion and daily life may coexist, expressing the equivocal aspects of this world. By inviting the viewers to my simulated reality, ubiquitous yet non-existent, I suggest doubting the certainty of our binary perception and knowledge about reality.

Youngmi Won is a Korean Canadian interdisciplinary artist and educator born in Seoul, Korea. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Painting and Art History from Ewha Womans University in Korea and worked as an art educator for ten years. She currently lives and works in Toronto, completing her BFA in Drawing and Painting with a minor in Art History at OCAD University. Her practice focuses on navigating the collaborative and innovative possibilities between analogue and digital techniques through photography, painting, and video installation. Embracing escapism, she composes the dreamlike yet equivocal space where illusion and daily life coexist as an imaginary resistance to unsettling, transient reality.
