Tibetan and Nubian Muskoka Home
“A ‘Home for New Canadians’ was a collaborative group project that challenged designers to create a residential space in Muskoka, Ontario, for two primary tenants from distinct cultural backgrounds. We were given a list of underrepresented cultures in Western society and selected the Tibetan and Nubian communities for our design. The project’s main objective was to seamlessly integrate design elements and principles from both cultures into a cohesive and harmonious home while maintaining functionality, comfort, and cultural authenticityMy role focused on designing the layout of the first floor, which includes shared common spaces such as the living room, kitchen, dining area, and guest bathroom. I carefully considered spatial planning to promote interaction and inclusivity while incorporating key cultural influences from both backgrounds. This involved researching traditional Tibetan and Nubian architectural elements, materials, and decorative motifs to create a balanced environment thatreflects both identities. Additionally, I prioritized natural lighting, open-concept living, and sustainable design choices toenhance the overall ambiance and livability of the space. By thoughtfully merging these cultural aesthetics, the design fosters a welcoming and meaningful home for its residents. ”
