During their occupation in Vietnam, the Japanese army purposefully starved Vietnamese civilians to use their rice for themselves and export, leading to countless deaths and misery. The yokai is Gaki, a forever starving creature that lives in horrible torment, disfigured and never full no matter what they eat.
