“Traces of Us is a body of work in which Ava Tsoutsos investigates what remains of memory as it is retold, archived, and transmitted over time. The project examines how familial narratives shift through repetition and reinterpretation, positioning memory as fluid rather than fixed. Through the layering of family photographs, Tsoutsos reimagines these images as oil paintings in which multiple moments and perspectives coexist within a single surface. The work challenges the notion of collective memory as stable or universally shared. Instead, it suggests that collective memory is constructed from a network of individual experiences, each shaped by personal perception. Each painting functions as a family portrait embedded within a visual palimpsest, where figures, histories, and relationships intersect. Carefully considered landscapes, gestures, and body language personalize each subject, grounding them in specific emotional and relational contexts. The painted surfaces are structured through brushstrokes that echo the movement of water, suggesting both the instability and continual motion of memory. Across the series, images overlap, repeat, and at times conflict, forming a visual language that is simultaneously intimate and collective. Each work contributes to a larger network of connections, where meaning emerges through accumulation and dialogue.Together, the paintings in Traces of Us invite viewers to reflect on how their own memories participate in shaping shared histories, and how understanding is formed through the ongoing exchange between personal experience and collective interpretation. ”
