Printmaking and Publications

“Fletcher Barrett is interested in the continuation and promotion of lithographic knowledge. In their book, Big Compendium of Lithography: The Registration Process, they unite with the voices of lithographers, artists and authors, to create an accessible and contemporary resource on registration within lithography. This project is the first step in their goal to explore and document every aspect of lithographic printmaking.Registration in printmaking is the alignment of layers: paper to matrix, ink to paper, ink to ink. In their research, Fletcher, found that there was a disconnect; many sources spoke of only one or two methods of registration, or their instructions were so brief it seemed unimportant. Some did little more than define the word. In Big Compendium of Lithography: The Registration Process, they explore the methods of various artists, give their own instructions and experiences of creating prints using those techniques. This piece is an act of conservation, documentation, and a performance of reflexive art in lithography and publications. In the history of printmaking, prints about prints and printmaking have been a way to advertise, celebrate, and document the processes their makers love. In their research for Big Compendium of Lithography: The Registration Process, Fletcher continued that tradition with the print series Our Registration. These prints show printmakers using the three methods of registration that were used in making those very prints: T and Bar, Pinhole, and Punch registration.

Fletcher Barrett is a multi-disciplinary printmaker currently focused on lithographic printing. Their work is both archival and artistic, exploring historical and contemporary methods of lithograph while documenting and sharing as much of those methods as possible. After spending 2 year (2018-19) at NSCAD University Fletcher worked in film as part of the special effects and prosthetic effects teams on multiple productions before the siren song of printmaking called. In 2023 they were accepted at OCAD University to continue their degree in printmaking and publications. While there, they were able to explore more self directed projects and refining the methods of art Fletcher loves most, Lithography.
