“'Between Being Seen and Seeing: The Human Figure In A Media Saturated World'In the cities in which we live, all of us see hundreds of promotional images every day of our lives. No other kind of image confronts us so frequently. In no other form of society in history has there been such a concentration of images, such a density of visual messages. (Berger, 129) This body of work investigates the body and the effects media and advertisement has on the human figure and the resulting hybridity and loss of authenticity that arises as a result. Using oil paint as my medium and a collage/photo based methodology, this work, through the construction of fictional and narratively based scenes; mimic the iconography of film and cinematography. My process of editing in conjunction with the physicality of oil painting, opposes the fast-paced never ending visual culture we find ourselves surrounded in today, and works to create a mark of personal agency behind what we see and consume. The theatrical/cinematic compositions depict figures in authentic and personal spaces, moments in time that are uninfluenced from any outside expectations, bringing the body out from the dehumanizing and often overwhelming pressure of appearance based media, that often shape our self-perception.”

Connor Garito is an oil painter living in Mississauga, Ontario, currently working in a collage/photo-based methodology, investigating the effects that media and advertising have on the body, through the construction of fictional and narratively based scenes, mimicking and referencing the iconography of film and cinematography
