“Cosplay is the art and practice of dressing up as a character from any genre of media, and is most often associated with the anime, comics, and video games scene. It is a subculture filled with passion, craftsmanship, creativity, and community for individuals who love a medium and its characters. Cosplay embodies battle armour; the formation of a layer between the world and me, leaving my personal self behind and inhabiting the character I have dressed up as. I adore the art of cosplay, the hard work that goes into production, and the love that cosplayers pour into their craft. When I'm in Cosplay centers the individuals within my cosplay community. My work explores every member's favourite cosplay/s: Oscar François de Jarjayes, Marina Domek, Genderbent Nightwing, Starfire, Umi Sonoda, and Luka Megurine. This community is so special to me through the bond we have with each other, as well as the comforting, positive, non-judgmental space where we can share our passions openly, giving freedom for self-expression and exploration. Thus, in turn, I am shining a light on our hard work and sparking a conversation about a unique subculture that blurs the lines of individuality. ”

Maya Juric is a Toronto-based photographer pursuing their Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography at OCADU, creating work that explores their interests; cosplay and themes of cosplay, nostalgia and dreamlike moments. Their photographs, often backlit with natural light, evoke an ethereal glow, capturing fleeting beauty in scenes that feel cinematic and suspended in time. Through this approach, Juric aims to create a series of photographs that extend their dreamlike world into a universal work of art.
