This project focuses on the site of Lake Ontario Park in Kingston, Ontario. This project is a creation that helps children with hypersensitivity to learn how to explore sound and touch through water play, and uses the sound of water to relax them. Children who have hypersensitivity tend to be overwhelemed by loud noises, bright colours or lights, and other sensory-triggering situations. Since children are prone to be more stressed or emotionally distraught in settings like a doctor's office, the science center is a space for children to explore those senses of touch and sound without feeling overwhelmed. The science center allows children to explore nature and water rather than built environments that could cause the children to feel overwhelmed by too many things happening at the same time. Families are able to book a residence that sits right on the water to continue the sense of water and nature grounding when they have finished their day of exploring the science center, which includes water exhibits and water sensory play to teach them in a safe and fun environment. While the main attraction is the science center, there are other fun activities for children to be involved in, like the water walk, landscaping playgrounds immersed in the forest, or end their day at the beach. There is multiple playgrounds and interactive plays for children through the natural landscape as they walk along the lake. The concept of this space combines the built environment and nature to create a safe and fun place for children. The idea that nature, or plants that are colourful, are used to be designed in the built environment to give natural colours and add without overwhelming the children. The concept of this place is to have a continuous flow and connection through nature, while on a walk, with the connections being the different activities that children can play in.
“This project uses ecology and the reusable materials like wood and natural decor from plants to create an immersive nature design for the science center of nature and plants, and water. This is a grounding and exploration space that children are able to use touch and sound senses to calm themselves.”
