Reduction block print on canvas, cotton thread embroidery.
Reduction block prints on canvas with embroidery elements linking the individual pieces into one multi-media installation system.
“Inspired by artist Anni Albers, and papers such as: ”Feminism as Practice: Craft,Labor, and Art Therapy” by Savneet Talwar, as well as the quilting, knitting, crocheted and embroidery works of my Tias abuelas (great aunts), my Mama(mother) and my Baba (grandmother) in-law, I sought to step back from my self, taking time to reflect on the matriarchs in my life and to uplift their artistry, andtheir time through this piece. I hoped to elevate these practices’ artistic andconceptual value, highlighting their importance as traces of our collectivehuman instinct for expression and creation.I wanted to bring in a softness to this work, to celebrate it, to revel in its strengthand beauty. The symbol of the hourglass represents not only the time thatconsumes us, but also the time dedicated and poured into our art and craft. These ideas of softness, femininity, aging, decay, creation, loss and artistic valueare of great interest to me. At times the feeling that I am as a reduction blockmyself overcomes me and weighs on me like stones sinking me in a cold lake. Ibattle these leaden thoughts through my practice, creation over desperation.”
