Bloom/Birth

Performance
2025
Bloom/Birth is a live motion tracking and projection mapping piece that explores themes of birth and rebirth through movement and live performance. As the participant in front of the camera moves, visuals follow them and transform, like flowers in bloom or caterpillars changing into butterflies. Visitors participate in movement and interact with the visuals, adding their interpretation to the cycle of life. Bloom/Birth utilizes the Kinect to create a live motion tracking piece in TouchDesigner that is projection-mapped to parts of the body. It is real-time and can be customized for different images and music tracks.

“I was fascinated by many real-time projection-mapped performances online, and wanted to recreate this style of performance and technology on my own. Utilizing TouchDesigner and a Kinect, I built a system that tracks the position and motion of my body in real time and accurately projects elements onto my limbs, the elements being triggered by music. The performance and movement aspect of this work was also very important, as I wanted to explore the relationship between creativity, technology, humans, and nature, emphasizing an interactive experience between the art piece and the audience.
