This work reflects on how I understand my grandmother, and how my perspective has often been shaped by the roles she plays rather than who she is as an individual. It is also a tribute to her, celebrating her life and the depth of who she is beyond those roles.

“In this family portrait painting, I aimed to redefine the narrative surrounding my grandmother, who is often viewed as a caregiver. Initially, I considered painting her holding my baby cousin, one of my favourite pictures that perfectly captures her nurturing spirit. But I realized I wanted to express a broader, richer portrayal of her identity. I was confronted with how limited my view of my grandmother is: Who is she outside of being a loving, kind person who takes care of the whole family? Selecting a family photograph was difficult, as there are so many cherished memories to choose from. Yet, I was particularly drawn to one stunning image of my grandmother that places her front and center, showcasing her individuality and strength. In this painting, she wears Eritrean cultural clothing known as Zuria and a matching gold jewelry set that highlights her heritage and celebrates her as a vibrant, multifaceted woman. This choice to paint my mama felt especially meaningful, as I am fortunate to have one grandparent still with us who plays a prominent role in the family. I felt my grandmother truly deserved this tribute, a painting honoring her life and contributions, encapsulating her spirit in a way I do not often see. This portrait serves as a celebration of her outside of the family, inviting others to see her not just as a caregiver but as an influential figure who has shaped my family’s narrative.
