Fish Prints

Print
2026
These fish prints were created using a historical printing practice and were created with almost entirely recycled materials, including the fish themselves! These prints highlight native species of fish that inhabit our marsh and wetland environments, which are ecosystems often overlooked despite their immense ecological importance. Fish work in marshes at filtering organic matter, consuming insects and their larvae to control population, cycling nutrients throughout marshes, and are also a natural food source for humans and other animals above and below the water. The work documents the life beneath the murky waters' surface that we often don’t see. The prints are also giving discarded materials a new life in the form of art, when they were otherwise going to contribute to waste. The printing papers were all cut from half-used pads of paper, the ink used was in a pile of discarded materials, the brushes were leftover from a class a few years ago, and even some of the fish were donated by members of the community for the purpose of my project. These prints were created as part of my Instauration project, which revolves around showcasing life in wetlands and marshes and how these ecosystems function and sustain themselves.
