Hockey represents Canada, not because it is inherently Canadian in its makeup, but because Canadians make it Canadian. The social and cultural meanings applied to hockey are self-imposed. Meaning that we can look at hockey, not simply as just a sport and a form of play, but as a metaphor and symbol that represents Canada and its culture. By placing a hockey stick in a position used to imply violence and weaponry, we can begin to truly deconstruct the perpetuation of white colonial violence within hockey (Canadian) culture.
