Afrofuturism
Curation
The Almeda Collective's (OCADU's Black student union) 2026 Black History Months Exhibition, curated by Wuliyah Hankey.
“Afrofuturism is a concept developed from the Author, Musician and cultural innovator Sun Ra in the 1960’s amongst the fight for civil rights. Afrofuturism revolves around art, technology and science, the theme blends these aspects with black diasporic culture and history, recontextualizing and imagining the Black quotidian and or experience through alternate futures with a base of empowerment. Innovative and speculative lenses of the arts are used throughout this concept by artists to produce a vision of black futures and Ideals. Throughout the curation of this exhibition we had asked artists to consider themes and concepts such as Black Everyday Life, Music and Dance, Themes of mental/physical health, Spirituality and Faith as well as Fine art and design to create artworks that envisioned and presented afrofuturistic realities. We have had the pleasure to work with wonderful upcoming artists of the Black/African diaspora that have taken the concept of Afrofurturism into their practice to produce the works presented here!On the Behalf of the Almeda Collective, we thank you for joining us!"Where human eyes have never seen, where human beings have never been, I build a world of abstract dreams, and I wait for you." ~ Sun Ra”
