Brown Kraft Paperboard
An eco-friendly battery brand that acts as an alternative to current single-use battery products. This project is part of OCAD University's Packaging Design 2 course with Stuart Werle and is inspired by Dieline's "Design for Good" Award. This project was created in collaboration with Emmit Tam.Pulse is a sustainable battery brand and initiative that encourages consumers to make eco-conscious decisions when handling their batteries. This packaging concept is made up of 3 different SKUs: Rechargeable AA Batteries, Rechargeable AAA Batteries, and Single-Use AA Batteries. When doing store and product checks, many battery packages lacked the information on how to dispose the dead batteries. They used blister packaging to contain the batteries, which created more problems about recycling due to their dual usage of plastic and cardboard, difficulty accessing the product due to the blister packaging's stubborn nature, and containing the excess batteries that aren't needed. Our packaging hopes to solve these issues by completely removing plastic packaging, creating access to open and close the packaging, and use the design to incorporate call-to-actions while partnering up with retail locations, encouraging consumers to recycle batteries properly.Additionally, while rechargeable batteries are the more obvious, eco-conscious choice, we sought to add a single-use option that hopes to aid medical centres for their high-drain, battery-reliant tools. The box itself turns into a dispenser, controlling the amount of batteries you need at a time with a reveal on one side. We also developed a system that allows users to figure out which batteries are dead. Each battery has a red and green strip on each end, and using our reveal in the box, the user can flip the battery over and insert the dead battery on the top of the dispenser, then showing a red line to signify it's dead. Regarding access, our package removes the use of plastic materials and instead relies on a tab system to enclose the batteries. With its portable size, you're able to set up and use the batteries anywhere, anytime.

“Primary Batteries (AA, AAA) are important, everyday household items. From personal experience, there hasn't been much awareness of how we should be recycling our batteries, as it can become problematic environmentally. ”
