The Interstitial project is a study of how graphic design can be used to explore the meaning of the word interstitial, meaning ‘the space in between’. The project visualizes 2D, 3D, 4D, and reflective pieces revolving around the chosen interpretation of the word, interstitial spaces, or ‘the space between destinations. Each section involves physical output, including photography and print, 3D printing, and collage. The 2D portion features images captured on a receipt paper camera, which thermal prints pictures out just after taking. Each image documents an interstitial space, slowly fading from the receipt paper over time, just as the memory of passing through interstitial spaces also fades through a person’s memory. The 3D portion is a design of an interstitial space. If looked at from the correct angle, an optical illusion appears making the structure look endlessly looping, stuck in transition. The reflective piece is a collage of artifacts from the process of creating the previous works, highlighting the transitional work between the beginning and the end of a long term project. The reflective piece is a collage of artifacts from the process of creating the previous works, highlighting the transitional work between the beginning and the end of a long term project.

“Even starting with a single word can lead to so many communicative possibilities. Graphic design has the potential to interact and communicate beyond the 2d, and should stimulate all of your senses.”

“How can we emphasize craft in a world where graphic design is associated with digital practices and outcomes?”
